Monday's a Day for a Spun Sugar Fail!

Hello all and welcome to another installment of my mini-Monday fails!

In this case the fail wasn't monumental, it was just too time consuming to do both hands by the time I started to try this mani and the results weren't as perfect as I wanted.

I did the Spun Sugar mani, though it has other names like thin lines or dripping polish I like 'spun sugar' best since I think it more accurately describes the effect. Either way, to do this you plop down some polish onto any random surface you don't mind getting ruined, your boyfriends favorite shirt that you hate for example, and wait for it to get stringy and annoying and sort of drape it over your nail for a cool effect.

I started with two coats of Essie Bikini So Teeny, a beautiful clean shade of blue (cornflower maybe?).

I really like Bikini So Teeny (aside from the fact that the shimmer in the bottle doesn't really translate to the nail). It had a good two coat formula and the color is just so...pretty!

This technique is MESSY. Or maybe it's me. Either way, you were warned.

Look at all those bubbles!

I have top coat on my pinky and ring finger and just left the natural texture on my middle and pointer finger so you'd see the difference. I used Sally Hansen Hard to Get for the white and it just did not want to get stringy! Every time I use this polish for nail art it strings and frustrates me and the one time I needed it to annoy me, it didn't want to! Touché polish, touché. I'll get you back though.

I'll definitely be trying this technique again with more patience and consider doing maybe less lines and a different polish for sure. What about you guys? Something you're wanting to try or have done?

Have a nice Monday! (As nice as a Monday could be)

  1. It looks kinda cool, the bubbles look like you did them on purpose!

  2. I'm wearing Bikini So Teeny right now and I'm with you. I wanted that shimmer so badly on the nail. Still a pretty color though. I hope to try this technique soon. I'm sure there will be many fails before I get it right, lol.

  3. You wants I should rough that jerk polish up, boss? I hate when they don't behave. I still think this looks awesome, I will never get tired of this technique. Honestly I don't think I've seen anyone do this without at least one tiny bubble so whatevs, I love it. And that is hardly messy :P

    1. Yeah, I have a couple of bottles that need some 'discipline' see? Just warn them what's comin' if they don't go straight (< Chicago mobster accent). Thank you :D

  4. I like it. It's different, and you'll never have the same mani using this technique. Your mani looks great!

  5. I'm posting a spun sugar mani next! :) I did less in the way of lines though since it was alredy so time consuming and messy and I just wanted to go to freaking bed (I polish late at night usually)! It did take forever for the polish to get stringy. And even then, alot of time I would lift the polish and the string would break, leaving me with this little fragment. Frustrating! Its such a cool effect though. I plan on trying it again someday when I have a few hours to dedicate to it.

    1. Same exact thing happened to me! It was so late that I just did one hand, photographed it and called it quits. I'll def be on the lookout for your post!

    2. I did both hands, but only because my OCD made me! It took FOREVER! I love the effect though. I have to try this with white next time. The more I look at it, the more I really like the white. I'm just now re-discovering white for nail art. I don't know why, but my brain always defaults to black or a matching shade of the base color. I think I have a short circuit somewhere. ;)

  6. That blue polish is awesome. Yes, sugar spun technique is messy and the strings dont come out the way you want. But the beauty of it is it looks great whatever size the strings are. Also it looks different everytime you do it.

    1. I think there's definitely a learning curve with this but it's worth it. It's a good way to spice up a mani without stamping and such.
